Background & History

Class XAPc was a small class of only seven boxcars numbered 19900 thru 19906. These were the first sixty foot boxcars bought new for freight service, but not the first sixty foot boxcars. (In 1933 on the Reading there were as many as nine sixty foot baggage cars assigned to freight service.) Built in 1964, they included double doors for ease of access to larger loads.  These few cars had an unusual financing arrangement in that they were purchased under three separate Trusts. One Trust was for only one car.

Boxcar 19903 is expected to be restored to its original paint scheme having “Speed Lettering”, and the “Black Reading Diamond”.

Currently the boxcar is being used at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum to store “Tower Displays”. The model boards are from several towers on the Reading system and the boxcar is open to the public when the museum is open.
