Reading Company Box Car, Class XLj, #24495
Background & History
Another Mystery car from the D&H. Car number D&H 24495 was one of the 295 boxcars that went from the Reading to D&H as part of the Conrail set-up in 1976. We could not find a picture of 24495 so we substituted D&H 24413’s picture. The Reading class XLj third batch of cars were built in 1972. These were 50’ box cars with roller bearing trucks, hydraulic cushioning units, and “DF” load restraint hardware installed.
Hopefully when the car gets renovated, we can find the Reading reporting number under that paint out. Plans call for the repaint of this car into its original “Banner” paint scheme.
Look closely (at picture) at how the paint out of the Reading reporting marks was done, and replaced by D&H reporting marks. Clearly there was no interest in repainting the car as this picture was taken 20 years after the formation of Conrail and the 295 XLj boxcars going from Reding to D&H.
Substitute picture of D&H 24495.
