Ex- NYC X4000 Car Mover
Background & History
As near as we can tell, this unusual piece of equipment originated on the New York Central Railroad and was likely built in their own shops. A little short Car Mover (engine) is used to move cars around and is short enough to move onto a turntable with a car. It was likely stationed at one of the NYC passenger terminals.
This particular car mover is battery powered. It gets its battery charged when not in use. The operator stood at one end and operated the controls while standing at the control console.

Being built by NYC, the car mover likely got passed along to the Penn Central Railroad, then passed along to Conrail, hence the peeling blue paint. We acquired the car mover from Conrail.
Everything on the car mover looks to be complete, except for the batteries. We have talked about restoring the unit, but priorities get in the way.
