Background & History

This photo shows the Lehigh Valley covered hopper while in route to the R&N yard in Leesport, PA. It was donated to the RCT&HS by Conrail. It remained in Leesport until the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum opened. Several freight trains were used to transfer the hopper and other equipment to the new yard in Hamburg, Pa.

90006 was built in 1950 for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. It has a capacity of 1,122 Cubic Feet.  It was rated at a 55 ton capacity and is equipped with bottom discharge outlet doors. It was considered a maintenance of way car and was primarily used to haul dry sand for use in locomotives.

RCT&HS currently has no plans for use or restoration of the covered hopper.
