Background & History

The relief train had to be equipped with enough tools and material to get the job done. Tools of every description were needed to complete the mission. Tools for separating cars and getting them ready to be lifted. Tools for restoring the track after the wreck was removed. Tools for repairing cars temporarily to make them safe to move. The tool car was a former Baggage car that was converted to carry all of this equipment in an organized manner to make them ready for use. Our Tool Car was formerly on the Reading Relief Train that was once stored in Reading, PA.

Our tool car was restored in 1995 to its original Reading Yellow and Green Paint Scheme. It is currently on display in the yard at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg, PA.
